Bathroom remodeling

Bathrooms built to stay dry for decades.

Walk-in showers, soaking tubs, tile, vanities and lighting, built on proper waterproofing, drainage and ventilation that you will never see but always benefit from.

Why bathrooms fail

What is behind the tile matters most.

Most bathroom failures are invisible until they are expensive: a shower pan that leaks into the subfloor, grout cracking over a flexing floor, or a fan that never moved enough air.

A well-built bathroom starts with the structure. Subfloors are checked and stiffened where needed, showers get a proper waterproofing system and slope to the drain, and ventilation is sized and ducted to the outside. Then the tile, glass, vanity and fixtures go on a base that will last.

Primary baths and hall baths

Popular primary bath remodels combine a frameless glass shower, a soaking tub and a double vanity. In older homes, a new bathroom can get an arched entry, a wood vanity and tile chosen to suit the age of the house.

Layout and plumbing

Moving a toilet or shower is possible, but it means moving drains, which is simple on a raised foundation and more involved on a slab. Ask what a layout change costs before deciding whether it is worth it.

Accessibility and aging in place

Curbless or low-threshold showers, blocking in the walls for future grab bars, wider doorways and comfort-height fixtures are easiest to add during a remodel.

Bathroom details

The parts you will never see.

01

Waterproofing

A continuous waterproofing system and correct slope to the drain are what keep a shower from rotting the floor below.

02

Solid substrate

Tile needs a stiff, flat base. Joists and subfloor should be checked before tile goes down, so it does not crack later.

03

Ventilation

A properly sized fan ducted outside protects paint, grout and framing from moisture for the life of the room.

Questions

Common questions

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A full gut remodel of a single bathroom typically takes a few weeks of construction once materials are on hand. Custom glass and special-order tile are the usual long-lead items.

Can I convert my tub to a walk-in shower?

Yes. It is one of the most common bathroom remodels: the drain is reworked, a waterproofed shower pan is built and glass and tile are added.

Do bathroom remodels need permits?

When plumbing, electrical or ventilation is changed, yes. Nearly every full bathroom remodel involves at least one of those.
