Fire rebuilds

Rebuilding after a fire, with an experienced builder.

A rebuild is new construction. We connect families with a licensed general contractor experienced in new homes and wildfire rebuilds across Ventura County, Malibu and the South Coast.

What a rebuild involves

From damaged structure to a home again.

After a fire, families face insurance adjusters, debris removal, permits, new code requirements and dozens of contractor bids, all while living somewhere temporary. A builder who has done it before makes every one of those steps easier.

For example, one Ojai rebuild after the Thomas Fire chose to build larger: the home grew from 1,600 to 2,400 square feet with a new three-car garage. The original slab was kept where it could be saved and new sections tied in, the garage pad was over-excavated and compaction-tested, the electrical service was relocated closer to the utility pole, and the gas line was upsized for the larger home and the water line for a new fire sprinkler system.

What a rebuild contractor should help with

Reviewing what can be saved, such as foundations and slabs; building an itemized estimate that works with your insurance claim; coordinating design, engineering and permits, including the wildfire-resistant construction requirements that apply in fire hazard areas; and managing construction through final. See our fire rebuild guide for the steps and the state rule that can protect your property taxes.

Rebuild planning

What makes a rebuild go faster.

01

Save what is sound

A foundation or slab that passes engineering review can save time and money. Have it evaluated before design.

02

Estimate for the claim

A detailed, itemized estimate helps you work with your insurer on what the rebuild actually costs.

03

Build to current code

Rebuilds must meet today's codes, including wildfire-resistant materials and, often, fire sprinklers. Plan for them up front.

Questions

Common questions

Can I rebuild larger than my original home?

Often, yes, subject to zoning and permits. Building larger can affect fee waivers, streamlined approvals and how the rebuild is assessed for property tax; see our rebuild guide.

Can my existing foundation be reused?

Sometimes. A structural engineer evaluates fire damage to the slab or foundation before design.

Will the contractor work with my insurance company?

A good rebuild contractor provides detailed, itemized estimates and documentation you can use with your insurer. Your policy and adjuster determine what is covered.
